Xinyang (simplified Chinese: ; traditional Chinese: 信陽; pinyin: Xìnyáng) is a city in southeastern Henan province, People's Republic of China. It is the southernmost city in the province. In 2020, its total population was over 6.2 million people. About 1.2 million people live in the main city area, which includes the Pingqiao and Shihe districts.

Where is Xinyang?

Xinyang covers a large area of about 18,819 square kilometers. It is located in the very south of Henan Province. The city sits on the south bank of the Huai River. It is also in the middle of the Dabie Mountains area.

Xinyang shares borders with other cities in Henan. To the north is Zhumadian, and to the northwest is Nanyang. It also borders Anhui province to the east and Hubei province to the south. The area around Xinyang is considered a subtropical region. The Dabie Mountains are mainly to the north, south, and east of the city.

Climate and Weather

Xinyang has a climate with four distinct seasons. It gets a lot of rain, especially in summer. Winters are cold and damp. Summers are hot and humid. From April to June, the weather is a bit cooler than in other parts of Henan.

The average temperature in January is about 2.4°C (36.3°F). In July, it rises to about 27.3°C (81.1°F). The average temperature for the whole year is about 15.54°C (59.97°F). Xinyang gets over 1100 mm (43 inches) of rain each year. Most of this rain falls between May and September. The city also gets about 1,974 hours of sunshine every year.

People and Population

In 2010, the population of Xinyang was about 6.1 million people. This was a small decrease from the year 2000. The main city area, which includes two urban districts, is home to about 1.2 million people.

Xinyang is famous for its tea! Every year, from April 28th to 30th, the city hosts the Xinyang Tea Culture Festival. This is a big event that celebrates the local tea.

The city also has a large sports stadium called Xinyang Stadium. It can hold 25,000 people. It is mostly used for football games and sometimes for track and field events.

There is an important historical place called Jingju Temple in Guangshan county. It is very old, dating back to 554 A.D. This temple was a key place for the start of a Buddhist school called "Tiantai" in China.
