Yacolt is a small town in Clark County, Washington, USA. In 2023, about 1,626 people lived there. It is located about 30 miles northeast of Vancouver. Vancouver is part of the larger Portland-Vancouver area.

A Look at Yacolt's Past
The name Yacolt comes from the Klickitat word "Yahkohtl." This word means "haunted place" or "place of spirits." The area was also known as "the valley of lost children."
In September 1902, a huge fire called the Yacolt Burn almost destroyed the town. At that time, Yacolt only had 15 buildings. This fire was the biggest in Washington state's history. Yacolt was rebuilt over time. It officially became a town on July 31, 1908.

Fun Things to Do in Yacolt
The Chelatchie Prairie Railroad is a popular attraction in Yacolt. It offers fun train rides. The tracks were first built around the early 1900s. They stopped being used in 1984.
In the 1990s, people worked to fix the tracks. This led to the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad program starting in 2001. The railroad hosts special events all year. These include a Headless Horseman Train Ride for Halloween.
The most famous event is the Christmas Train Ride, also called the Santa Train. This yearly event travels 13 miles through mountains. Riders see Yacolt Falls, a rock tunnel, and Moulton Station. The train is a diesel engine from 1941. It pulls passenger cars built in the 1910s and 1920s.
