Yanchep is a coastal town located in Perth, Western Australia. It is about 56 kilometers (35 miles) north of the main city center of Perth. Yanchep is part of the City of Wanneroo, which is the local council that manages the area.
Yanchep started as a small place where people fished for crayfish. In the 1970s, a businessman named Alan Bond began to develop it. He had big plans for Yanchep, especially for the 1977 America's Cup sailing race. The area includes both the main town of Yanchep and the large Yanchep National Park.

Exploring Yanchep's Location

Yanchep is a very large suburb, covering over 220 square kilometers (85 square miles). This makes it one of the biggest areas in the City of Wanneroo. However, most of the homes and shops in Yanchep are found near the coast, around the main intersection of Marmion Avenue and Yanchep Beach Road.
A Look at Yanchep's Past
For thousands of years before Europeans arrived, the Indigenous Australian Noongar people lived in the Yanchep area. It was a well-known place for hunting. The name Yanchep comes from the Noongar word "Yandjip" or "Yanget." This word refers to the bulrush reed, which grows commonly in the wetlands here.
In 1970, Alan Bond bought a large piece of land in Yanchep. His company, Bond Corporation, planned to build a huge "Sun City" here. They imagined it would become a future city with over 200,000 people. The first houses were built in 1972. A marina was also built nearby in Two Rocks as part of this big project. However, by 1974, fewer people were buying homes. In 1977, a Japanese company called Tokyu Corporation took over the project.
The government of Western Australia has also marked Yanchep as a future "satellite city." This means it is planned to grow into a major center outside of Perth.
In December 2019, a large bushfire started in Yanchep. It burned for several days, affecting about 14,000 hectares (34,595 acres) across Two Rocks and into the Shire of Gingin. Luckily, about 6,000 homes were saved, with only one house being lost. The old Yanchep petrol station, a local landmark, was destroyed in the fire.
