Yanshan University began as part of the Harbin Institute of Technology in 1920. This was originally called the Harbin Sino-Russian Industrial School.

In 1958, a special part of the Harbin Institute of Technology, which focused on heavy machinery, moved. It went to Fulaerji in Heilongjiang Province. There, it was renamed the School of Heavy Machinery of the Harbin Institute of Technology.

Becoming the Northeast Heavy Machinery Institute (1960-1997)

In 1960, the School of Heavy Machinery became its own independent university. It was then called the Northeast Heavy Machinery Institute. A year later, in 1961, it joined with two other colleges.

By 1978, it was recognized as one of China's 88 most important universities. Starting in 1984, parts of the institute began moving to Qinhuangdao. This is a city on the coast in Hebei Province.

In 2008, they even opened a Confucius Institute at UToledo. This institute helps people learn about Chinese culture and language. Many students have taken Chinese classes, and cultural events have reached thousands of people. Leaders from both universities visit each other often. They have also started programs for law students and health care training.

Part of the BRICS Universities League

Yanshan University is also part of the BRICS Universities League. This is a group of universities from countries like Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. They work together on education and research.
