Yanshan University started as part of the Harbin Institute of Technology in 1920. Back then, it was called the Harbin Sino-Russian Industrial School.

In 1958, a special part of the Harbin Institute of Technology moved. This part focused on heavy machinery. It moved to Fulaerji, a key industrial town. Fulaerji is in Heilongjiang Province, northeast China. This part of the school was then called the School of Heavy Machinery.

Northeast Heavy Machinery Institute (1960-1997)

In 1960, the School of Heavy Machinery became its own independent school. It was renamed the Northeast Heavy Machinery Institute. A year later, in 1961, it joined with two other schools. These were the Shenyang College of Heavy Machinery and the Lanzhou Petroleum Industry Institute.

In 1978, the institute was recognized as a very important national university. It was one of 88 such schools. Starting in 1984, some parts of the institute began to move. They moved to Qinhuangdao, a city on the coast in Hebei Province.
