Yates is a town in Orleans County, New York, United States. In 2010, about 2,559 people lived there. The town is named after Joseph C. Yates, who was a governor of New York a long time ago.
The Town of Yates is located in the northwestern part of Orleans County. It's important to know that there is also a Yates County in New York, but they are different places.

History of Yates
The first person to settle in the area was George Houseman around 1809. The town of Yates was officially created in 1822. It was formed from a part of the Town of Ridgeway. For a short time, it was called "Northton."
In 1903, the Village of Lyndonville became its own separate village. It used to be part of Yates.
Famous People from Yates
Many interesting people have come from Yates. Here are a few:
- George D. Lamont: He was a New York State Senator. This means he helped make laws for the state.
- Edmund L. Pitts: He was born in Yates in 1839. He became a New York State Assemblyman, also helping to create laws.
- William S. Pitts: Born in Yates in 1830, he was a Christian composer. He wrote the famous song "The Church in the Wildwood."
Geography of Yates
The town of Yates covers about 37.5 square miles (96.83 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the town's borders.
The northern part of Yates is right next to Lake Ontario. This is a very large lake. The western edge of the town touches the Town of Somerset in Niagara County.
Several important roads run through Yates:
- New York State Route 18 (also called Roosevelt Highway) runs east and west.
- New York State Route 63 (Lyndonville Road) runs north and south. These two roads cross each other in the northern part of the town.

- Platten – A location also found on the eastern border of the town.
- Shadigee – A small village right on the shore of Lake Ontario, where NY-63 ends.
- Yates Center – This hamlet used to be called "Northton." It's located on NY-63, just north of Lyndonville.
