Yevhen Petrovych Kushnaryov (Ukrainian: Євген Петрович Кушнарьов) was an important Ukrainian politician. He was born on January 29, 1951, and passed away on January 17, 2007.
Kushnaryov was known for his strong ideas within the Party of Regions. He was also a close supporter of Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych.

Early Life and Education
Yevhen Kushnaryov was born in the city of Kharkiv, which is in Ukraine. His parents had moved there from Russia.
When he was young, his family moved to Melitopol. He went to school there and finished in 1968.
After school, Yevhen started studying at the Odessa Institute of Civil Engineering. Later, he moved to the Kharkov Institute of Civil Engineering. He graduated in 1973 with a degree in mechanical engineering.
Political Career Highlights
Yevhen Kushnaryov began his political journey in 1981. He joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
In 1989, during a time of big changes called Glasnost, he supported the movement for democracy in Ukraine. In 1990, he was elected to two important groups: the Kharkiv City Council and the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine's parliament).
In parliament, he helped create Ukraine's first constitution. In 1994, he became the mayor of Kharkiv.
Serving the President and Region
After being mayor, Kushnaryov worked for Leonid Kuchma, who was the President of Ukraine. He was the President's chief of staff from 1996 to 1998.
Later, from 2000 to 2004, he served as the governor of the Kharkiv Oblast. This meant he was in charge of the Kharkiv region.
In December 2001, Kushnaryov helped organize a big meeting in Kharkiv. It was an economic forum for businesses from Ukraine and Russia. Both Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma and Russian President Vladimir Putin attended. At this event, Kharkiv was called "the capital of Russian-Ukrainian relations."
In 2003, Yevhen Kushnaryov signed an agreement with the Governor of the Belgorod Oblast in Russia. This agreement created a special area called the Euroregion “Slobozhanshchina”. This region helped improve connections between areas in many fields, like culture and money. In 2004, the Euroregion “Slobozhanshchina” joined the Association of European Border Regions.
Joining the Party of Regions
During the Orange Revolution in Ukraine, Kushnaryov spoke about creating a separate state in southeastern Ukraine. This was if Viktor Yushchenko won the election. He faced accusations related to his political views, but these were later dropped.
After the Orange Revolution, Kushnaryov joined Viktor Yanukovych's Party of Regions. In 2006, he was elected to the Verkhovna Rada (parliament) as a member of this party.
Kushnaryov quickly became one of the main leaders of the Party of Regions. Many people saw him as one of the party's key thinkers. He often appeared on television to discuss important public issues. In 2005, he wrote a book called Red Horse: Notes of a Counterrevolutionary. In this book, he shared his views on the Orange Revolution.
Death and Legacy
On January 15, 2007, Yevhen Kushnaryov was accidentally shot while hunting with friends. He was injured in his liver. He passed away two days later in a hospital in Izium.
The city of Kharkiv declared two days of mourning to honor their former governor. Yevhen Kushnaryov was survived by his wife, two children, and two grandchildren.
In October 2008, a monument was built in Kharkiv to remember Kushnaryov. The Yevgeny Kushnaryov Foundation for Democracy Initiatives Support was also started in October 2007. This organization aims to continue the ideas that were important to him.

Interesting Fact
Even though his Ukrainian name was Yevhen (Євген), Kushnaryov personally preferred to use the Russified form Yevheniy (Євгеній) when writing in Ukrainian.
