Yi Junyong (before 1917)

Yi Junyong (이준용), also known as Prince Yeongseon (영선군), was an important person in the Joseon royal family of Korea. He was born on July 23, 1870, and passed away on March 22, 1917. He was a politician and a thinker. Later in his life, he became a supporter of Imperial Japan.

His special courtesy name was Gyunggeuk. He also had nicknames like Seokjung and Songjung. Yi Junyong was the grandson of Heungseon Daewongun. He was also the nephew and a political rival of Emperor Gojong and Empress Myeongseong.

Early Life and Career

Yi Junyong was born in 1870. His father was Prince Imperial Heung, who was the older brother of Emperor Gojong. In 1884, Yi Junyong began his career in the Joseon government.

He passed a special literary exam in 1886. After that, he was appointed as Daegyo of Gyujanggak, a royal library.

Political Challenges

In 1886, a Chinese official named Yuan Shikai tried to remove Emperor Gojong from power. Yuan Shikai wanted to make Yi Junyong the new king. However, another powerful Chinese official, Li Hongzhang, stopped this plan.

After a sad event involving Empress Myeongseong, Yi Junyong was released from a difficult situation due to Japanese influence. His grandfather, Heungseon Daewongun, suggested he go to Japan for safety. But Yi Junyong chose to stay in Korea.

Attempts to Change Government

Prince Yeongseon tried to overthrow his uncle, Emperor Gojong. However, his plan was discovered before he could act. He was put in prison for trying to change the government.

But the Emperor later gave him a special pardon. After being released, Yi Junyong traveled around Europe. He returned to Japan in January 1899. In June 1900, he was involved in another attempt to overthrow the government with Ahn Gyeong-su.

On November 27, 1907, Yi Junyong was given the rank of Major General in the Imperial Korean Army.
