History of Youngtown
How Youngtown Began
In 1954, two developers bought about 320 acres of farmland. They wanted to build a special community. This community was the first in the United States made just for retirees. Retirees are people who have stopped working, often because of their age.
The community was designed by Ben Schleifer. He also had the idea for an active retirement community. Even though it was for older people, they ironically named it Youngtown. In 1955, 125 homes were built there. Many other lots were sold for future homes.
Youngtown Gains Attention
Two years later, in 1957, Youngtown was shown on a TV show called Wide Wide World. This brought a lot of national attention to the area. Because of this, more people started to move to Youngtown. This helped the community grow even more.
In 1959, a local farmer named Jim Boswell II kept some land near Youngtown. He did this when he sold land to Del Webb for a new community. This saved land allowed Youngtown to have space to expand later.
Becoming a Town and New Rules
A year later, on January 1, 1960, Sun City opened right next to Youngtown. In the same year, Youngtown officially became a town. Also, the country's first AARP Chapter was started in Youngtown. AARP is a group that helps older Americans.
For a while, Youngtown had rules about who could live there based on age. In 1996, the town did not allow a 16-year-old to stay there. After this, the Arizona attorney general, Grant Woods, looked into the rules. He found that the age rules could not be enforced. So, in 1999, Youngtown removed these age restrictions.
