Yu Kuo-hwa (Chinese: 俞國華) was a very important leader in Taiwan. He served as the Premier of the Republic of China from 1984 to 1989. The Premier is like the head of the government.

Early Life and Education
Yu Kuo-hwa was born on January 10, 1914. His hometown was Fenghua, which is in Ningbo, Zhejiang, China. He was a very good student. He went to two famous universities. He studied at Harvard University and the London School of Economics. These studies helped him prepare for his future roles.
Important Roles in Government
Yu Kuo-hwa held many important jobs in the government. On November 29, 1967, he became the Minister of Finance. This meant he was in charge of the country's money. In 1969, he became the Governor of the Central Bank of China. This bank helps manage the country's economy.
Premier and Major Changes
Yu Kuo-hwa became the Premier in 1984. This was a very important time for Taiwan. As Premier, he helped end martial law in 1987. Martial law meant that the military had special powers. It had been in place for 38 years. Ending it was a big step for Taiwan's freedom. It allowed people to have more rights.
In October 1988, something unusual happened. Yu Kuo-hwa walked out of a meeting of the Legislative Yuan. The Legislative Yuan is like Taiwan's parliament. He left because there was too much debate. He could not give his reports. This was the first time a government official had done this.
Yu Kuo-hwa served as Premier until 1989. Before him, Sun Yun-suan was Premier. After him, Lee Huan took over. Yu Kuo-hwa passed away on October 4, 2000. He was 86 years old. He died in Taipei, Taiwan.
