The Story of Yum-Yum Donuts
How It All Started
Yum-Yum Donuts was founded in 1971 by a person named Phillip C. Holland. He opened the very first shop in a building that used to be an Orange Julius store. This first location was in the Cypress Park area of Los Angeles, California. Guess what? That original shop is still open today!
Growing the Business
Phillip Holland was looking for someone to help him manage his first shop. He put an advertisement in the newspaper and met Frank Watase. Frank later became his business partner. By 1973, Holland had opened three shops. He then sold half of his company to Frank Watase. Together, they worked hard and opened more than 100 Yum-Yum Donut shops!
New Leadership
In 1989, Phillip Holland decided to retire. He sold his share of the company to Frank Watase. Frank then owned and ran the company with his son, Lincoln Watase. Frank Watase passed away in September 2020. Today, his son, Lincoln Watase, is the President of Yum-Yum Donuts.
Yum-Yum and Winchell's Donuts
In 2004, Yum-Yum Donuts bought another well-known donut chain called Winchell's Donuts. This purchase added 70 more donut shops to their business. By 2019, there were a total of 126 Winchell's and Yum-Yum Donut shops in the greater Los Angeles area. This made Yum-Yum Donuts the largest chain of privately owned donut shops in the United States. Both Yum-Yum Donuts and Winchell's have their main offices in the City of Industry, California.
