The Story of Yum Yum Donuts
How It All Began
Phillip C. Holland started Yum Yum Donuts in 1971. He opened the very first shop in a building that used to be an Orange Julius store. This original location is still open today! You can find it at Avenue 26 and Figueroa Street in the Cypress Park area of Los Angeles, California.
Growing the Business
Mr. Holland needed help running his first shop. He placed an advertisement in a newspaper looking for a business manager. This is how he met his future business partner, Frank Watase. By 1973, Holland had expanded to three shops. He then sold half of his company to Frank Watase. Together, they worked to open more than 100 donut shops!
New Leadership
In 1989, Phillip Holland decided to retire. He sold his remaining share of the company to Frank Watase. Mr. Watase then owned and ran the company with his son, Lincoln Watase.
Adding Winchell's Donuts
In 2004, Yum Yum Donuts bought another well-known donut chain called Winchell's Donuts. This purchase added 70 more donut shops that were ready to operate. By 2019, there were 126 Winchell's and Yum Yum Donuts shops in the greater Los Angeles area. Yum Yum Donuts is known as the largest chain of privately owned donut shops in the United States. Both Yum Yum Donuts and Winchell's have their main offices in the City of Industry, California.
Today's President
Frank Watase passed away in September 2020. Today, his son Lincoln Watase is the President of Yum Yum Donuts. He continues to lead the company.
