The Story of Winchell's Donuts
How Winchell's Began
Winchell's Donut House was founded by Verne Winchell in 1948. He opened his first shop in Temple City, California. From the very beginning, Winchell's aimed to offer fresh and tasty doughnuts.
Winchell's Slogan and Special Dozens
The company's famous slogan is "Home of the Warm 'n Fresh Donut." Winchell's is known for being one of the largest doughnut chains on the West Coast. They also have a special offer for their customers. Instead of a standard baker's dozen (which is 13 doughnuts), Winchell's gives you 14 doughnuts in a dozen!
Changes in Ownership
In 2004, another company called Yum-Yum Donuts bought Winchell's. Yum-Yum Donuts runs about 70 of its own doughnut shops. However, they decided to keep the Winchell's name for the Winchell's stores. This means you can still enjoy your favorite Winchell's doughnuts under the same name.
Store Changes Over Time
Between 2002 and 2008, Winchell's closed its shops in Portland, Oregon. Other doughnut shops called "Heavenly Donuts" took their place. In 2005, Winchell's also left the Kansas City area. Most of those locations then became Krispy Kreme doughnut shops.
