Yuta's Journey to Becoming an Idol
Starting His Career: 2011–2015
Yuta became interested in becoming an idol in 2011 after watching the famous group TVXQ on television. Even though he had no experience in singing or dancing, he bravely attended many auditions. In 2012, he tried out for SM Entertainment's first global audition. This was a huge event, and Yuta was one of only three people out of 10,000 to pass! He was just 16 years old at the time.
In December 2013, Yuta was introduced as a member of SM Rookies. This was a special team for trainees (young artists in training) at SM Entertainment who were preparing for their debut. As part of SM Rookies, Yuta appeared on a TV show called Exo 90:2014 in 2014. On the show, he danced to K-pop songs from the 1990s. In 2015, he also represented Japan on a show called Abnormal Summit, where people from different countries discussed Korean culture. He left the show to focus on his upcoming debut.
Debuting with NCT 127: 2016–2019
Before his official debut, Yuta starred in the first two seasons of NCT's reality show, NCT Life. These shows gave fans a peek into the members' lives and their pre-debut concert in Thailand.
On July 2, 2016, Yuta was announced as a member of NCT 127. This is a sub-unit of the larger group NCT. He officially debuted with NCT 127 when they released their first single, "Fire Truck," on July 6, 2016. A few days later, they released their first mini-album, NCT #127.
Yuta also appeared on the TV show Idol Party from late 2016 to early 2017. In 2019, he helped host a special episode of the 2019 Idol Star Athletics Championships, a fun event where idols compete in sports.
