About Zakhar Prilepin
Early Life and Education
Yevgeny Prilepin was born on July 7, 1975, in a village called Ilyinka. His mother was a nurse and his father was a teacher. In 1984, his family moved to Dzerzhinsk.
He started working at 16, loading bread in a shop. He studied Philology (the study of language and literature) at Nizhny Novgorod State University. He also went to the School of Public Policy. Before becoming a writer, he worked as a laborer and a security guard.
Military Service
Prilepin served as a squad leader in a Russian police group called OMON. He took part in fighting in Chechnya in 1996 and 1999.
In 1999, he left OMON because he needed more money. He then started working as a journalist.
Writing Career
After leaving the police, Prilepin became a journalist for a newspaper in Nizhny Novgorod called Delo. He used many pen names, with Eugene Lavlinsky being the most famous. By 2000, he became the editor of the newspaper.
Around this time, Prilepin began writing his first novel, The Pathologies. He said that his experiences in Chechnya greatly influenced this book.
His writings have appeared in many newspapers and magazines. These include Limonka, Literary Gazette, North, and New World. He was also the main editor for the People's Observer, a newspaper for the National Bolshevik Party in Nizhny Novgorod.
Prilepin has also written a biography about the Soviet novelist Leonid Leonov. He is a member of a group called the Izborsky Club, which is a group that shares ideas.
Political Involvement
Prilepin was a member of the National Bolshevik Party and supported a group called The Other Russia. He helped organize a protest march in Nizhny Novgorod in 2007.
In 2017, Prilepin shared that he was leading a group of volunteers in the People's Republic of Donetsk. This group was known as Prilepin's Battalion. He said he was second in command and held the rank of major.
In 2018, Prilepin returned to Moscow. The group he served with was later disbanded.
In 2018, he joined the All-Russian People's Front. Because of this, he was no longer part of The Other Russia political party.
In 2019, he started a public movement called For Truth (За правду). He hoped this movement would become a political party. However, in 2021, the party joined with A Just Russia.
Prilepin has supported Russia's actions in Ukraine since 2022. Because of this support, several countries have placed restrictions on him. These countries include Australia, Canada, the European Union, New Zealand, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. In January 2023, Prilepin signed a contract to join the Russian National Guard and served in Ukraine again.
