Yevgeny Nikolayevich Prilepin (born 7 July 1975) is a Russian writer and politician. He is better known by his pen name, Zakhar Prilepin. He sometimes used another pen name, Yevgeny Lavlinsky.
He was a member of Russia's National Bolshevik Party from 1996 to 2019. He also led the political party For Truth from February 2020. This party later joined with A Just Russia in February 2021.

Early Life and Education
Yevgeny Prilepin was born on July 7, 1975. His birthplace was the village of Ilyinka in Ryazan Oblast. His mother was a nurse and his father was a teacher. In 1984, his family moved to Dzerzhinsk.
Prilepin started working at age 16. He worked as a loader in a bread shop. He later studied at Nizhny Novgorod State University. He also attended the School of Public Policy.
Career and Military Service
Prilepin worked many different jobs. He was a laborer and a security guard. He also served as a squad leader in a Russian police group called OMON. He took part in fighting in Chechnya in 1996 and 1999.
In 1999, Prilepin left OMON due to money problems. He became a journalist at a newspaper in Nizhny Novgorod called Delo. He used many pen names, with Eugene Lavlinsky being one of the most famous. By 2000, he became the editor of the newspaper.
Around this time, Prilepin started writing his first novel. He said it began as a love story. However, it turned into a novel about his experiences in Chechnya. He described this as the most powerful experience of his life.
Writing and Political Views
Prilepin's writings have appeared in many newspapers and magazines. These include Limonka, Literary Gazette, and New World. He was also the chief editor of the People's Observer. This was a newspaper for the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the National Bolshevik Party.
He has attended several writing seminars and forums. He also wrote a biography of the Soviet novelist Leonid Leonov. Prilepin is a member of a group called the Izborsky Club. This group focuses on ideas and thinking.
Prilepin was a member of the National Bolshevik Party. He also supported a group called The Other Russia. He helped organize a protest march in Nizhny Novgorod in 2007.
In July 2012, he wrote an essay called "A Letter to Comrade Stalin." This essay caused some controversy.
Involvement in Donbas
In February 2017, Prilepin shared that he was leading a volunteer group. This group was in the self-proclaimed People's Republic of Donetsk. He was a second-in-command with the rank of major. He claimed his group was formed in July 2016.
Prilepin was a well-known person in the Donetsk region. He returned to Moscow in July 2018. The group he served with was disbanded in September 2018.
Later Political Career
On November 29, 2018, Prilepin joined the All-Russian People's Front. Because of this, he was no longer part of The Other Russia political party.
On October 29, 2019, he started a public movement called For Truth. He planned for this movement to become a political party. This party would take part in the 2021 legislative election. However, the party merged with A Just Russia in February 2021.
Prilepin supported Russia's actions in Ukraine in February 2022. Because of his support, several countries have placed restrictions on him. These countries include Australia, Canada, the European Union, New Zealand, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The European Union added him to their list of sanctioned individuals in February 2022.
In January 2023, Prilepin signed a contract to join the Russian National Guard. He served in Ukraine for a second time.
Attack on Prilepin
On May 6, 2023, an incident occurred involving Prilepin's car. His car was damaged in the Nizhny Novgorod region. This happened while he was traveling to Moscow. Prilepin was injured, and his bodyguard passed away.
A group called the Atesh partisan movement claimed responsibility for the incident. This was one of several similar incidents targeting public figures in Russia. On June 6, 2023, Vladimir Putin awarded Prilepin the Order of Courage.
On September 30, 2024, a man named Alexander Permyakov was found guilty. He was sentenced to life in prison for his part in the attack.
Personal Life
Zakhar Prilepin is married to Maria. They have two sons, Gleb and Ignat, and two daughters, Kira and Lilia. Prilepin lives in Nizhny Novgorod.
