Zilupe is a small town in Latvia. It is located right next to the Zilupe River, which also forms part of the border with Russia. The town's name in the Latgalian dialect is Sīnuoja, which means 'border'. In 2020, about 1,343 people lived there.

Zilupe has a railway station that is the last stop for trains coming from Riga. This train route is one of the longest in Latvia.

How Zilupe Began

Zilupe started to grow around the year 1900. This was when a new railway line was being built between Ventspils and Moscow. The train station was named Rozenova, after the person who owned the land nearby.

Early Days of Rozenova

A small community of merchants and railroad workers soon formed near the station. By 1908, Rozenova already had important services. These included a police department, a school, and a post office.

Zilupe During the Wars

The growth of Rozenova stopped because of the First World War. In 1918, the railway bridge over the Zilupe River was destroyed.

Soviet Rule and Freedom

From 1918 to 1920, Rozenova and other parts of Eastern Latvia were under Soviet control. In January 1920, the Latvian army freed Rozenova. This was a key moment in the Latvian War of Independence.

Becoming Part of Latvia

After Latvia became an independent country, the settlement was renamed Zilupe. It was named after the Zilupe River. Zilupe became an important center in its region. In 1925, it was recognized as a village. Then, in 1931, it officially became a town.

Life in Zilupe Before World War II

Most people in Zilupe worked in trade and agriculture. By the 1930s, the town had a water mill and a sawmill. There was also a small hospital and about 120 shops.

World War II Occupation

During World War II, the German Army took control of Zilupe. This happened on July 6, 1941. The German Army stayed until July 18, 1944. Zilupe was managed as part of a German-controlled area called Reichskommissariat Ostland.

Zilupe After World War II

After World War II ended, several larger businesses opened branches in Zilupe. These included a workshop that made metal parts. There was also a small factory for textiles and a bakery.

Getting Around Zilupe

The town is located near the A12 road. This road crosses the border into Russia. Once in Russia, it becomes the M9 road. Both the A12 and M9 roads are part of European route E22.
