Zimmerman is a city in Sherburne County, Minnesota, USA. In 2020, about 6,189 people lived there. It's a mostly rural area, meaning it has lots of open spaces and fewer big buildings.
The main road through Zimmerman is U.S. Highway 169. The city is about 42 miles northwest of Minneapolis and 33 miles southeast of St. Cloud.

History of Zimmerman
The area was first set up as the Village of Lake Fremont in 1910. Later, in 1967, its name was changed to the City of Zimmerman.
Lake Fremont was named after John C. Frémont, a famous explorer of the American West. The name Zimmerman comes from Moses Zimmerman. He was a local farmer who helped bring the Great Northern Railway to the area.
Fun Events in Zimmerman
Every year, Zimmerman hosts a community event called "Wild West Days" during the Memorial Day weekend. It's a big celebration with lots of activities for everyone!
The event includes a carnival at Lion's Park, where you can ride fun rides and play games. There's also a softball tournament, a 5k charity run, and a fireworks show that lights up the night sky. A parade marches through town, often featuring the Elk River School District's marching band, the local fire department, and floats from businesses.
Another exciting event is the annual open house for the Zimmerman/Livonia Fire Dept. This happens the weekend after Labor Day. You can tour the fire station, see safety demonstrations, and enjoy other activities. Afterward, there's a street dance right in front of the station. Many local churches and groups also join in the fun during this weekend.

Lakes and Water Fun
Lake Fremont is a beautiful lake on the east side of the city. It's fed by natural springs. Here, you can go fishing, enjoy boating, or swim on a hot day.
Nature Preserves and Forests
Zimmerman is known as the entrance to the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is special because it protects one of the few natural oak savannas left in the country. An oak savanna is a unique type of grassland with scattered oak trees.
You can also visit the Sand Dunes State Forest nearby. This forest has many miles of trails perfect for horse riding and snowmobiling. It's also a great spot for camping, fishing, hiking, and swimming.

Schools in Zimmerman
Zimmerman has three school buildings that serve students from kindergarten through high school.
Elementary Schools
- Zimmerman Elementary School: This is the oldest school building. It was built 50 years ago in 1957 and was updated in 2009. It teaches students in kindergarten through second grade.
- Westwood Elementary School: This school is very modern and energy-efficient. It has won many awards for using very little energy, which means low energy bills! It has a great air filter system, and its lights adjust automatically. This school is for students in third through fifth grade and was finished in 2004.
Middle and High School
The city also has a combined Middle/High School. Before 2005, high school students went to Elk River High School. But then, an addition was built, creating a full high school in Zimmerman. The high school sports teams are called the Thunder.

In 2020, the city had 6,189 people living in 1,988 households. Most people (82.1%) were White. About 0.8% were African American, and 3.5% were Asian. About 11.7% of the people identified with two or more races. People of Hispanic or Latino background made up 7.7% of the population.
In 2010, there were 5,228 people and 1,802 households. About 52.2% of households had children under 18 living with them. The average household had 2.90 people, and the average family had 3.28 people.
The average age in Zimmerman in 2010 was 29.7 years old. About 33.8% of residents were under 18. Also, 36.9% were between 25 and 44 years old. The population was almost evenly split between males (49.2%) and females (50.8%).
