Where Was the Zipaquirá Province?
Land and Location
The Zipaquirá Province was located in the northwest part of what is now the Cundinamarca Department in Colombia. Its land was roughly the same as the areas known today as Central Savanna and Rionegro. This region was very mountainous because the Eastern Mountain Range (part of the Andes) ran through it from north to south. This mountain range was almost parallel to the Bogotá River, which was the main waterway in the area.
How the Province Was Divided
The Zipaquirá Province was split into three main areas called cantons. These were Zipaquirá, Guatavita, and La Palma. Each canton was then divided into smaller parish districts and villages.
Here are the towns and villages in each canton:
- Zipaquirá Canton: Zipaquirá, Cajicá, Cogua, Cota, Chía, Gachancipá, Nemocón, Pacho, Sopó, Suesca, Tabio, and Tocancipá.
- Guatavita Canton: Guatavita, Gachetá, Gachalá, Guasca, Medina, Sesquilé, Upía, and Cabuyaro.
- La Palma Canton: La Palma, Caparrapí, Peña, Peñón, Topaipí, and Yacopí.
