Az-Zubayr ibn Al-Awam (Arabic: الزبير بن العوام بن خويلد; 594–656 AD) was an important figure in early Islam. He was a cousin of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad and one of his closest followers, known as a companion. Zubayr was among the very first people to accept Islam.

He was also one of the ten companions whom Prophet Muhammad promised a special reward in the afterlife. After Muhammad's death, Zubayr became a key leader in the Muslim community. He was a skilled military commander and played a big role in the early expansion of the Islamic empire. Zubayr died during a conflict known as the Battle of the Camel.

Early Life and Family

Az-Zubayr was born in the city of Mecca in 594 AD. His father was Awwam ibn Khuwaylid. His mother was Safiyya bint Abd al-Muttalib, who was Prophet Muhammad's aunt. This made Zubayr a first cousin to Muhammad. He was also a cousin to important figures like Ali and Ja'far.

Zubayr grew up in Mecca. He was known for his bravery and strength even when he was young. He was one of the first few people to become Muslim. This was at a time when being Muslim was very difficult and dangerous in Mecca.

Becoming a Muslim

Zubayr was very young when he accepted Islam. He was only about 15 or 16 years old. He became Muslim through the teachings of Abu Bakr, who later became the first leader of the Muslim community.

At that time, Muslims in Mecca faced a lot of challenges. They were often treated badly because of their new faith. Zubayr was known for standing up for Islam. He was one of the first to draw his sword to defend the Prophet Muhammad.

A Brave Warrior

Zubayr was a very brave and skilled fighter. He took part in many important battles during the early days of Islam. He fought alongside Prophet Muhammad in almost all major battles.

  • Battle of Badr: This was the first major battle between the early Muslims and their enemies from Mecca. Zubayr fought bravely and helped the Muslims win.
  • Battle of Uhud: In this battle, Zubayr was one of the few who stayed close to Prophet Muhammad when others were retreating.
  • Battle of the Trench: Zubayr played a key role in scouting the enemy during this siege of Medina.
  • Conquest of Mecca: He was part of the Muslim army that peacefully entered Mecca.

After Prophet Muhammad's death, Zubayr continued to serve the Muslim community. He became a top commander in the Rashidun army.

Military Leadership

Zubayr was a very important military leader. He led Muslim armies in major conquests. These conquests helped spread Islam to new lands.

Conquest of Egypt

Zubayr played a big role in the Muslim conquest of Egypt. He was a key commander under Amr ibn al-As. His bravery and military skills were very important in taking control of Egypt. This was a major victory for the early Muslim state.

Later Life and Legacy

After the major conquests, Zubayr remained an important figure. He was one of the six people chosen to decide who would lead the Muslim community after the second Caliph, Umar ibn al-Khattab, died.

However, later in his life, Zubayr became involved in a conflict. This conflict is known as the First Fitna, or the First Muslim Civil War. It was a time of disagreement and fighting within the Muslim community.

Zubayr was killed during this conflict in 656 AD. He died in the Battle of the Camel, near the city of Basra in Iraq. He is remembered as one of the most important companions of Prophet Muhammad. He is known for his bravery, his early acceptance of Islam, and his military leadership.
