Álvaro Daniel Pereira Barragán (born on November 28, 1985) is a former professional footballer from Uruguay. He mostly played as a left-back, which is a defender on the left side of the field. He could also play as a left midfielder, helping both in defense and attack.

Álvaro Pereira started his career at Miramar Misiones in Uruguay. He then played for many teams in different countries, including famous clubs like Porto in Portugal and Inter Milan in Italy. With Porto, he won eight major titles and played in 118 games, scoring three goals.

Pereira also played for the Uruguay national team from 2008 to 2016. He played in two World Cups and three Copa América tournaments. He earned 83 caps (appearances) for his country and helped Uruguay win the Copa América in 2011.

Starting His Journey

Álvaro Pereira was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He began his football career with Miramar Misiones in 2003. Two years later, he moved to Argentina to play for Quilmes Atlético Club. After Quilmes was relegated from the top league, he joined Argentinos Juniors. He became the team's top goal scorer in the 2007 Apertura season.

In mid-2008, Pereira moved to Europe. He signed with CFR Cluj in Romania for about €2.5 million. He played in all of the club's games during their first time in the UEFA Champions League.

Playing for Porto

On June 4, 2009, Pereira joined FC Porto in Portugal. In his first year, he mostly played as a left-back. Porto finished third in the league and won the Taça de Portugal (Portuguese Cup). He scored his first goal for Porto on February 21, 2010, in a 5–1 win against S.C. Braga.

In his second season (2010–11) at Porto, he played in 21 league games. He also played in 12 UEFA Europa League matches. Porto had a fantastic season, winning three major trophies (the treble). He also played in the 2011 Portuguese Cup final. Porto won that game 6–2.

Porto turned down an offer from Premier League team Chelsea for Pereira in 2011. He then signed a new contract with Porto until 2016.

Time at Inter Milan

Pereira joined Inter Milan in Italy in August 2012. He signed a four-year contract. He played his first game in Serie A (Italy's top league) on September 2. He played in 40 games in all competitions during his first season. He scored one goal in a 2–0 league win against A.C. ChievoVerona.

In January 2014, Pereira moved to São Paulo FC in Brazil on a loan deal. He played his first game for São Paulo nine days later. He helped his new team win 2–1 against Oeste Futebol Clube.

Joining Estudiantes

In January 2015, Pereira returned to Argentina. He joined Estudiantes de La Plata on a temporary deal. He played in 36 games in his first year and scored three goals. In one game, an exhibition match, he was involved in a difficult moment that led to him being sent off. He received an eight-match ban for this incident.

He served his ban at his next club, Getafe CF in Spain. He joined Getafe on loan in February 2016. He played his first game for Getafe on March 1, 2016. He was sent off in that game after getting two yellow cards.

Later Career Teams

On July 3, 2016, Pereira signed a one-year loan contract with Cerro Porteño in Paraguay. He faced some injury problems during his time there.

In January 2019, Pereira returned to Uruguay. He joined Club Nacional de Football on loan from Estudiantes. In his first game for Nacional on February 4, he was sent off. However, his team still won the Supercopa Uruguaya on penalties against their rivals Peñarol.

After playing only a few games, Pereira became a free agent. He returned to Paraguay in January 2020, signing for Club River Plate (Asunción). Later that year, in October, he moved back to Europe. He joined ŠKF Sereď in Slovakia. He played only a few minutes before getting COVID-19. He left the club shortly after. In 2021, he played for Estudiantes de Mérida F.C. in Venezuela.

Álvaro Pereira made his first appearance for the Uruguay national team on November 19, 2008, against France. He scored his first international goal in his very next game, a friendly match against Libya, which Uruguay won 3–2.

Pereira was a key player for Uruguay during the qualifiers for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He helped his country reach the World Cup finals in South Africa. In the tournament, he played almost every game. He scored a goal with a header in a 3–0 group stage win against the host nation, South Africa.

He was also chosen for the 2011 Copa América in Argentina. He was a first-choice player and scored two goals in the group stage. One of these goals was the only goal in a 1–0 win against Mexico. Uruguay went on to win their 15th continental title in that tournament. In 2013, he played for Uruguay in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, where they reached the semi-finals. He also helped the team qualify for the 2014 World Cup.

On June 2, 2014, Pereira was named in Uruguay's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals. In a group game against England on June 19, he was hit on the head. However, he bravely refused to be substituted and continued playing for the full 90 minutes. Uruguay won that game 2–1.

At the 2015 Copa América in Chile, Pereira was suspended for the quarter-final match. His team lost that game by one goal. The next year, at the Copa América Centenario in the United States, he played in the first group game. In that match, he scored an own goal in a 3–1 loss to Mexico.
