Kings Expand Their Lands
In the year 1083, two powerful kings in what is now Spain were busy conquering new territories. These rulers were working to unite and strengthen their kingdoms.
Sancho I Captures Graus
Sancho I of Aragon was the King of Aragon and Navarre. He was a very active ruler, always looking to expand his kingdom. In 1083, King Sancho I successfully captured the town of Graus. This was an important victory for him. Graus was a strategic location, and taking it helped Sancho I control more land.
Alfonso VI Conquers Talavera
Another strong king was Alfonso VI of Castile. He was also known as Alfonso the Brave. King Alfonso VI was a key figure in the history of Spain. In 1083, his forces conquered Talavera de la Reina. Pope Gregory VII Besieged
Pope Gregory VII was the head of the Catholic Church. He was a very strong and determined leader. However, he had a major disagreement with Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor. Emperor Henry IV was the ruler of a large empire in central Europe. Their conflict was about who had more power: the Pope or the Emperor.
In June 1083, Emperor Henry IV's forces besieged Pope Gregory VII. The Pope was trapped inside Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome. This castle was a very strong fortress. The siege showed just how serious the conflict between these two powerful leaders had become.
