Key Events of 1081
This year saw several significant events across Europe, from changes in leadership to new construction projects.
Changes in the Byzantine Empire
In 1081, the Byzantine Empire, a strong empire that continued from the old Roman Empire, faced big changes. The city of Corfu, an island important for trade, was taken from the Byzantines by a powerful leader named Robert Guiscard. He was a Norman King from Southern Italy.
New Emperor Alexios I
The Byzantine emperor at the time, Nikephoros III, was removed from power. A new leader, Alexios I Komnenos, took his place. This change was very important because it ended one period of Byzantine history and started a new one, led by the Komnenan family (or dynasty). A dynasty is a series of rulers from the same family.
Alexios I quickly had to defend the empire. He tried to protect Albania from the Normans, who were attacking. This is the first time Albania is mentioned in recorded history! However, Alexios I and his forces were defeated by the Normans at the Battle of Dyrrhachium.
Other Important Events
- The building of Saint Canute's Cathedral began in Odense, a city in what is now Denmark.
- On May 8, Alfonso VI, the King of Castile (a kingdom in what is now Spain), married Constance of Burgundy.
