- On January 18, the city of Lima in Peru was founded by the Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro. This was a key moment in the Spanish conquest of South America.
- In April, the French explorer Jacques Cartier discovered a large Iroquois city called Stadacona in what is now Quebec, Canada. The next month, he found an even bigger Huron city named Hochelaga.
- On May 19, Jacques Cartier began his second voyage to North America. He sailed with three ships and 110 men. He also brought along two sons of Chief Donnacona, whom he had taken during his first trip.
