Egbert's Rise in England
In 825, a very important battle happened in England. Egbert of Wessex, who was the King of Wessex, fought against Beornwulf of Mercia, the King of Mercia. Egbert won this battle, which took place at a place called Ellandun.
This victory was a huge deal for Egbert. After he won, several other kingdoms in England decided to join him. These included Kent, Surrey, Sussex, and Essex. They all became part of Egbert's growing power. Also, the kingdom of East Anglia recognized Egbert as their main leader. This made Egbert one of the most powerful rulers in England at that time.
Conflicts in the Frankish Empire
Farther east in Europe, Emperor Louis the Pious was the ruler of the Franks. The Frankish Empire was a very large and powerful kingdom. In 825, Emperor Louis was busy leading his armies in battles. He fought against groups of people known as the Wends and the Sorbs. These conflicts were part of the ongoing efforts to control and expand the borders of the Frankish Empire.
