Aalten (pronounced like AHL-ten) is a town and a municipality in the eastern part of the Netherlands. A municipality is like a local government area that includes a main town and sometimes smaller villages nearby. The areas of Bredevoort (in 1818) and Dinxperlo (in 2005) became part of Aalten.
Some famous people have connections to Aalten. For example, Angus Young, the amazing guitarist from the rock band AC/DC, and Robert Gesink, a professional road bicycle racer, are linked to this area.
Aalten has a very special and brave history from World War II. Out of 85 Jewish people living in Aalten, 51 were hidden by local non-Jewish residents. Because of this incredible help, they survived the war. The War and Resistance Museum in Aalten says that the village had the highest number of people in hiding during World War II. This small village, with about 13,000 residents, managed to hide around 2,500 people, showing amazing courage and kindness.
