Early Life and Education
Aimee Lou Wood was born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. She grew up in a town called Bramhall. Her mother works for a helpline called Childline. Her father sells cars. Aimee also has a sister named Emily Wood, who is a makeup artist.
After her parents divorced, Aimee went to Cheadle Hulme School. She then took a special course at the Oxford School of Drama. In 2017, she graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art with a degree in Acting.
Acting Career
Aimee Lou Wood started her acting career in 2016. She began by performing in plays on stage. Her first role was a handmaiden in the play Mary Stuart. This play was shown at the Almeida Theatre in London until 2017. After that, she played Laura in the play People, Places and Things. She performed this role many times during a tour across the UK.
Breakthrough in Television
In 2019, Aimee Lou Wood appeared on screen for the first time. She played Aimee Gibbs, a main character in the Netflix comedy-drama series ... Education. She acted alongside stars like Asa Butterfield and Gillian Anderson. She first tried out for a different role, but she accepted the part of Aimee when it was offered to her.
The series was very popular and critics praised Aimee's acting. At the 2021 British Academy Television Awards, she won the British Academy Television Award for Best Female Comedy Performance. This was her first major award. She was nominated again for the same award at the 2022 British Academy Television Awards. Even with her TV work, Aimee continued to act in theatre. She said she didn't want to get "stage fright" by staying away from the stage too long.
Film and Stage Roles
In 2020, Aimee Lou Wood played Jess in a short film called "Hen." She also played Sonya Serebryakova in the play Uncle Vanya. This play was filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic at the Harold Pinter Theatre. It was shown in cinemas and on the BBC in the same year. Critics loved the play and Aimee's performance. Aimee has talked about her struggles with how she saw her body. In a 2020 interview, she shared that she had always struggled with her body image. She said that filming scenes in ... Education helped her accept her body as it is. Aimee also mentioned that seeing model Georgia May Jagger helped her feel more confident about her unique teeth. She had been bullied for them before.
In an interview in April 2025, Aimee Lou Wood shared that she was diagnosed with ADHD a few years ago. She also found out she has some "autistic traits." She was advised to get a formal autism assessment.
