Playing Career
Club Football
Albert Celades was born in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. He joined FC Barcelona's youth training system when he was young. He made his first team debut in the 1995–96 season. In his first professional season, he played 16 games and scored two goals. Barcelona finished third in La Liga that year. He also spent another full season playing for Barcelona's reserve team, Barcelona B.
In the 1997–98 season, Celades played 36 matches. He often played as a sweeper, a player who helps defend the goal. That year, the Barcelona team, led by coach Louis van Gaal, won the national title. He also played in both games of the 1997 UEFA Super Cup, where Barcelona won 3–1 against Borussia Dortmund. In the next season, 1998–99, he played less, but Barcelona won the league again.
After playing one year for RC Celta de Vigo, Celades joined Real Madrid in 2000. He had scored a winning goal against Real Madrid in a previous season. He played for Real Madrid for four seasons. During this time, he won two more league titles and the 2001–02 UEFA Champions League, which is a very important European club competition. In the 2003–04 season, he played on loan for Ligue 1 team FC Girondins de Bordeaux in France.
From 2005 to 2008, Celades played for Real Zaragoza. In his first year there, he helped the club reach the Copa del Rey final, which is Spain's main cup competition. He played regularly for Zaragoza. However, the team was moved down to a lower league at the end of the 2007–08 season. Celades then left the club.
In February 2009, he tried out for the New York Red Bulls in the Major League Soccer in the United States. He impressed them and signed with the team in March. Celades officially retired from playing football on October 24, 2009, after the season ended. However, in early 2010, a team from Hong Kong called Kitchee SC signed him and another Spanish player, Agustín Aranzábal. They both played for Kitchee in a special tournament called the 2010 Lunar New Year Cup.
International Football
Albert Celades played four times for the Spanish national team. He was part of the team that played in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He came on as a substitute in two matches, against Nigeria and Paraguay. Spain did not make it past the group stage in that tournament.
His first game for Spain was on June 3, 1998. It was a friendly match against Northern Ireland in Santander, which Spain won 4–1. Celades played the whole game. His last match for Spain was a 2–1 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina in a qualifying game for the 2002 World Cup. He played for 30 minutes in that game.
Celades also played for the Catalonia team, which is a regional team in Spain. He scored a goal in his first game for Catalonia on December 22, 1998, in a 5–0 win against Nigeria.
Coaching Career
On May 7, 2014, Albert Celades became the manager of the Spanish under-21 national team. Before this, he had been managing the under-16 team. In October 2014, his under-21 team lost a play-off match against Serbia. This meant they could not enter the 2015 UEFA European Championship, where they would have been the defending champions. The 1–2 loss in Cádiz was their first defeat in 35 games.
On July 18, 2018, Celades left his job at the Royal Spanish Football Federation after five years of managing youth teams. He had also worked as an assistant coach for the senior Spanish national team during the 2014 and 2018 World Cups and UEFA Euro 2016. On August 3, 2018, he was appointed as an assistant coach for Real Madrid, working again with Julen Lopetegui.
On September 11, 2019, Celades became the manager of Valencia CF after the previous manager was dismissed. His first match in charge was three days later, a 5–2 loss away to his former club, Barcelona. The next week, all the Valencia players did not attend a press conference with him before a Champions League match against Chelsea. They did this to show support for the previous manager.
Celades was removed from his position as Valencia manager on June 29, 2020. At that time, the team was in eighth place in the league, with six games left in the season.
