Alenka Sottler (born October 24, 1958) is a talented Slovene painter and illustrator. She lives and works in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Alenka is a freelance artist and a member of the New York Society of Illustrators.
She has illustrated more than 50 books for children and adults. For her amazing work, she has received many awards and honors. She was even nominated twice for the important Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2014.
About Alenka Sottler
Alenka Sottler was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Her father, Gorazd Sotler, was a sculptor. Her mother worked for a big newspaper company. Alenka learned a lot about drawing and sculpture in her father's art studio when she was young.
She studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana from 1976 to 1981. She continued her studies in painting there until 1983. Since 1988, Alenka has worked as a freelance painter and illustrator. She creates art for top publishers and magazines in Slovenia and other countries.
Her Art and Books
Alenka has illustrated over 50 books. She has also made many pictures for children's magazines. A big part of her work is illustrating fairytales. These include modern stories by authors like Oscar Wilde and classic tales like those from the Brothers Grimm.
Her black-and-white illustrations for "Folk Tales from Around the World" showed how skilled she was. She won many awards for these drawings. Her art is creative and beautiful. It is drawn with great confidence. She uses a modern style but also knows a lot about art history.
In recent years, Alenka has mostly illustrated poetry and fairytales. She also makes original prints inspired by books and poems. Today, she continues to live and work as an artist in Ljubljana.
