This means it's an area that the government counts as a separate place for population numbers, even though it's not an official city or town. In 2020, about 4,032 people lived in Alexandria. It is part of the larger Anniston-Oxford area.

Geography
Alexandria is located in the middle of Calhoun County. Its exact location is 33°45′57″N 85°53′3″W / 33.76583°N 85.88417°W. To the south, it shares a border with another community called Saks.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that Alexandria covers a total area of about 28.8 square kilometers (11.1 square miles). Most of this area is land, with only a very small amount (about 0.03 square kilometers or 0.01 square miles) being water.

By 2000, it was officially recognized as a census-designated place (CDP). In 2010, there were 3,917 people living in Alexandria. There were about 1,505 homes, and many of these were families. About 31.5% of the homes had children under 18 living there. The average age of people in Alexandria was around 39 years old.

Even though Alexandria is not an official city, it is a growing community. You can find several restaurants and stores along US 431 in the area. There's even a grocery store where US 431 meets State Route 144.
Local History
An important historical event happened near Alexandria in 1813. This was the Battle of Tallushatchee. During this battle, General John Coffee, sent by Andrew Jackson, led about 900 cavalry soldiers to fight against the Red Stick Creek Native Americans. The battle took place about 3.2 miles (2 miles) north of Alexandria. Famous frontiersman Davy Crockett was also part of this event.
