Alfonso E. Lenhardt (born October 29, 1943) is a retired U.S. Army officer. He reached the rank of Major General. He has served the United States in many important roles.

From 2009 to 2013, he was the U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania. He also represented the U.S. to the East African Community. Before that, he was the Sergeant at Arms of the United States Senate from 2001 to 2003. He had a long military career from 1965 to 1997.

Lenhardt was born in New York City. He studied Criminal Justice at the University of Nebraska. He also earned master's degrees from Central Michigan University and Wichita State University.

Military Career and Service

Alfonso Lenhardt became an infantry officer in 1966. He led a small group of soldiers called a platoon in the Vietnam War. For his bravery, he received several awards. These included the Bronze Star Medal and a Purple Heart.

After the war, he continued his military service. He commanded and trained military police units. He was promoted to major general in 1993. He retired from the Army in 1997. His other military honors include the Distinguished Service Medal. He also received the Defense Superior Service Medal.

Work in Government

In 2014, Lenhardt became the Deputy Administrator for the Agency for International Development (USAID). USAID is a U.S. government agency. It helps people in other countries around the world.

In February 2015, he became the acting administrator of USAID. This meant he was in charge for a short time. He served in this role until December 2015.

Alfonso Lenhardt served the U.S. government for over 40 years. He started as a young soldier in 1965. He took on more and more important jobs over the years.

Personal Life

In the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Lenhardt supported Kamala Harris.
