Algernon Darius Crumpler (born December 23, 1977) is a former American football player. He played as a tight end in the National Football League (NFL) for ten seasons. He was chosen by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 2001 NFL draft.
Crumpler played college football for the University of North Carolina. Besides the Falcons, he also played for the Tennessee Titans and New England Patriots. He was picked for the Pro Bowl four times. After his playing career, Crumpler became an analyst for the ACC Network.

Early Life and High School Sports
Alge Crumpler grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina. He went to New Hanover High School. There, he was a talented athlete in both football and track and field.
In football, he played as a tight end and a linebacker. In his final year, he was named an All-Midwest 4-A Conference player. In track and field, he was a champion in the discus three times. He also won a state championship in shot put in 1996. He finished high school in 1996.
College Football Career
After high school, Crumpler went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He played for the North Carolina Tar Heels football team. In his last three seasons, he was named to the All-ACC first-team.
As a sophomore, Crumpler caught 24 passes for 278 yards. Four of these catches were for touchdowns. In his junior year, he had 20 catches for 191 yards. During his senior season, he caught 23 passes for 287 yards and one touchdown. He finished second in the voting for All-American honors that year.
Professional Football Career
Alge Crumpler played for three different teams during his ten years in the NFL.
Atlanta Falcons Years (2001–2007)
The Atlanta Falcons picked Crumpler in the second round of the 2001 NFL draft. He was the 35th player chosen overall. His first NFL start was on September 23, 2001, against the Carolina Panthers. He caught his first two passes for 13 yards in that game.
Crumpler scored his first touchdown on October 21, 2001, against the New Orleans Saints. In his first year, he started 12 of 16 games. He had 25 catches for 330 yards and three touchdowns. In 2002, he caught 36 passes for 455 yards and five touchdowns.
In 2003, Crumpler was chosen for his first Pro Bowl. He started all 16 games for the Falcons. He caught 44 passes for 552 yards and three touchdowns. This was the most yards for a Falcons tight end since 1980.
In 2004, he played in 14 games and helped the Falcons reach the NFC Championship Game. He had 48 catches for 774 yards and six touchdowns. He was also picked for the Pro Bowl again. In 2005, he started all 16 games and set new career highs. He caught 65 passes for 877 yards and five touchdowns. This earned him his third straight Pro Bowl selection.
In 2006, Crumpler scored a career-high eight touchdowns. He also had 56 catches for 780 yards. He started 16 games that season. In 2007, he played in 14 games, starting 10. He finished the year with 42 catches for 444 yards and five touchdowns. The Falcons released Crumpler on February 15, 2008.
Tennessee Titans Years (2008–2009)
On March 2, 2008, Crumpler signed with the Tennessee Titans. He played his first game with them on September 7, 2008. He started 15 games in 2008, making 24 catches for 257 yards.
In 2009, Crumpler played in all 16 games for the Titans. He started 14 of them. He caught 27 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown. He was also an important part of the blocking team. This helped Titans running back Chris Johnson rush for over 2,000 yards that season.
New England Patriots Year (2010)
On March 24, 2010, Crumpler signed with the New England Patriots. He was named an offensive captain for the team during the season. Head coach Bill Belichick praised Crumpler's professional attitude. He said Crumpler always seemed to "do the right thing no matter what the situation is."
Crumpler finished the 2010 season playing in all 16 games. He started 10 of them. He had six catches for 52 yards and two touchdowns. The Patriots released him on July 29, 2011.
Personal Life
Alge Crumpler comes from a family of athletes. His father, Carlester Crumpler Sr., is in the East Carolina University Athletics Hall of Fame and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. Alge's older brother, Carlester Crumpler, also played tight end in the NFL for the Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings.
Alge was named after his father's favorite book, Flowers for Algernon.
