Algernon Darius Crumpler (born December 23, 1977) is a former American football player. He played as a tight end in the National Football League (NFL) for ten seasons. Alge was chosen by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2001 NFL Draft. He also played for the Tennessee Titans and New England Patriots. Crumpler was picked for the Pro Bowl four times, which is a big honor in football. Before playing professionally, he played college football for the University of North Carolina.

Alge Crumpler's Early Life and Sports

Alge Crumpler grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina. He went to New Hanover High School. There, he was a star in both football and track and field. In football, he played as a tight end and a linebacker. When he was a senior, he was chosen for the All-Midwest 4-A Conference team.

Track and Field Achievements

Crumpler was also very good at track and field. He won the state championship in discus three times. In 1996, he also won a state championship in shot put. He finished high school in 1996.

College Football Career

After high school, Alge Crumpler went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He played college football for the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Playing for the Tar Heels

During his last three years with the Tar Heels, Crumpler was named to the All-ACC first-team. This means he was one of the best players in his college conference.

Playing for the Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons picked Crumpler in the second round of the 2001 NFL draft. He was the 35th player chosen overall.

First Seasons with the Falcons

Crumpler started his first NFL game on September 23, 2001, against the Carolina Panthers. He caught his first two passes for 13 yards. His first touchdown came on October 21, 2001, against the New Orleans Saints. In his first year, he started 12 out of 16 games. He had 25 catches for 330 yards and three touchdowns. In 2002, he played in 16 games and started 9. He made 36 catches for 455 yards and five touchdowns.

Becoming a Pro Bowl Star

Crumpler earned his first Pro Bowl honor in 2003. He started all 16 games for the Falcons. He caught 44 passes for 552 yards and three touchdowns. This was the most yards for a Falcons tight end since 1980.

In 2004, Crumpler played in 14 games and started all of them. The Falcons made it to the NFC Championship Game that year. He finished the regular season with 48 catches for 774 yards and six touchdowns. He was chosen for the Pro Bowl again.

In 2005, Crumpler started all 16 games for the Falcons. He had his best year with 65 catches for 877 yards and five touchdowns. He was named to his third straight Pro Bowl.

Later Years with the Falcons

In 2006, Crumpler set a personal best with eight touchdowns. He also had 56 catches for 780 yards in 16 games. In 2007, he played in 14 games and started 10. He had 42 catches for 444 yards and five touchdowns. During this time, he showed support for his teammate, Michael Vick, during a difficult period. On February 15, 2008, the Falcons released Crumpler.

Time with the Tennessee Titans

On March 2, 2008, Crumpler signed with the Tennessee Titans. He played his first game with them on September 7, 2008. He started 15 games for the Titans in 2008, making 24 catches for 257 yards.

Playoffs and Blocking Success

In a playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens, Crumpler had a fumble. This play was part of the reason the Ravens won the game. In 2009, Crumpler played in all 16 games for the Titans, starting 14. He caught 27 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown. He was also a key part of the team's blocking unit. This unit helped running back Chris Johnson rush for over 2,000 yards that season.

Joining the New England Patriots

On March 24, 2010, Crumpler signed with the New England Patriots. He quickly became an important part of the team.

Becoming an Offensive Captain

After a teammate got injured, Crumpler was named an offensive captain for the Patriots. The team's head coach, Bill Belichick, praised Crumpler's professionalism. He said that Alge was very smart and always seemed to do the right thing. He also mentioned that Crumpler was always helping his teammates.

Crumpler finished the 2010 season with six catches for 52 yards and two touchdowns. He played in all 16 games and started 10. On July 29, 2011, the Patriots released Crumpler.

Alge Crumpler's Family and Life After Football

Alge Crumpler comes from a family of athletes. His father, Carlester Crumpler, was a running back for East Carolina. He was inducted into the East Carolina University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1980. He also joined the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. Alge was named after his father's favorite book, Flowers for Algernon.

Athletic Family Members

Alge's older brother, Carlester Crumpler, also played tight end for East Carolina. He later played for the Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings. Alge also has a half-sister, A'riana Crumpler, who competed in throwing events for ECU's track and field team. His half-brother, Isaiah Crumpler, plays football for Rutgers.

Alge Crumpler is married and has three children. After his football career, he worked as a sports analyst for the ACC Network. He also became a sports radio broadcaster in Atlanta.
