Alice Troughton's Career Journey
Early Life and Training
Alice Troughton studied drama at the University of Kent. During her second year there, she directed a play called Hamlet. She realized she wanted to be a TV director when she was 32 years old. Before that, she worked in different jobs. She directed plays in small theaters, wrote stories, and even worked as a driver. She also helped people as a care worker.
In 2002, Alice joined a directing course for the TV show Doctors. In the same year, she went to India and filmed her first short movie. It was called Refuge and was based on the diary of a young Tibetan woman. Later, she made another short film called Doris the Builder. This movie starred Tom Ellis and was based on a true story from her hometown, Aylesbury.
Directing Popular TV Shows
From 2006 to 2010, Alice Troughton directed episodes for Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and Doctor Who. She was one of the few directors to work on all three of these shows. These shows are all connected and happen in the same story world. Even though they share a last name, Alice is not related to Patrick Troughton. He was an actor who played the Second Doctor in Doctor Who in the 1960s.
Her directing work on Doctor Who was very well-liked. People especially praised the episode "Midnight". After this, she became a top director for many British shows. These include In the Flesh on BBC Three and Cucumber on Channel 4. She also directed Baghdad Central. For her work on Cucumber, she was nominated for an award in 2015.
Alice also worked on shows in the United States. She directed episodes for superhero series like The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow on The CW. She also directed for the science fiction show Lost in Space on Netflix.
Working with Actors
For Doctor Who, Alice Troughton cast Colin Morgan in one of his early TV roles. He played a character named Jethro Cane. This helped Colin Morgan get cast in Merlin. Alice then became one of the regular directors for Merlin starting from its second season. Alice and Colin later worked together again on the BBC drama The Living and the Dead.
Directing Feature Films
Alice Troughton's first full-length movie is called The Lesson. It stars famous actors like Richard E. Grant, Julie Delpy, and Daryl McCormack. The movie was first shown at the 2023 Tribeca Festival.
