Exploring All Saints' History

All Saints has a long and interesting past. Many of its buildings tell stories from over a hundred years ago.

The First All Saints Church

The very first All Saints Church and its school were built in 1864. They were located on Steelhouse Lane. Reverend Henry Hampton was the first minister of this church.

The Current All Saints Church

The church you see today was designed by architects T. Taylor Smith and G. F. Roper. It was built in an early Gothic style and officially opened in 1879. Two years later, it became its own separate church area, called a parish. More parts were added to the church building between 1892 and 1893. Today, the church is part of the larger Central Wolverhampton parish. A part of the church, called the nave, is now used by a local community group.

Schools in All Saints

Right next to the church was the All Saints' Infants and Junior School. It opened in 1894. This school closed in 1990, and its students moved to Grove Primary School. Grove Primary School is on Caledonia Road. The old school building is now called The Workspace. It is run by a group called All Saints Action Network. This group helps the community.

Another school in the area is St Mary and St John's Catholic Primary Academy. It is also located on Caledonia Road, next to Grove Primary School.

Life in All Saints Today

All Saints is a lively neighborhood with many different people living there.

Homes and Community

The area mostly has terraced houses built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many families from the Indian sub-continent, especially those who are Sikh and Ravidassia, live here. In the past, some of these older houses did not have bathrooms inside. Since then, many of these older homes have been updated or replaced.

Modern Landmarks

You can find several modern places in All Saints. There are car dealerships for Ford and Nissan. There is also a bowling alley where you can have fun. If you like to stay active, there's a Fitness First gym. The Royal Hospital, Wolverhampton used to be in this area, but it closed in 1997.

Local Churches and Support

Mount Zion 7th Day Church of God has a group on Caledonia Road. They also run a food bank to help people in need. Pond Lane Mission Hall is another historic church. It was built in 1896 and is sometimes called a "tin tabernacle" because of how it looks.

The James Baker & Sons Factory

On Vicarage Road and Cleveland Road, you can see the old factory of James Baker & Sons Ltd. This company used to make boots.

A History of Boot Making

The business started in 1850, making strong boots for workers. Later, they began making other types of boots and shoes. The factory building itself was built in 1861. It was made even bigger in 1898, extending to Powlett Street. The factory has a special design with a courtyard inside. It is now a Grade II listed building, which means it's protected because of its historical importance. The company stopped making boots in the 1970s.
