History of Allegheny West
The land where Allegheny West now stands was once used by Native American tribes. This was true until the late 1700s.
In 1787, a person named David Redick started surveying the land. This land was meant to be given to soldiers. These soldiers had fought in the American Revolution, which was the war for America's independence. It was part of their payment for serving the country.
In 1788, pieces of land in this area were sold at an auction in Philadelphia. The first houses in Allegheny West were built much later, around 1846 and 1847. Streets were also planned and built around this time. In the 1860s, there was a big increase in how many houses were built.
Millionaire's Row
In the late 1800s, Ridge Avenue became known as "Millionaire's Row." This was because many very rich families built huge, fancy houses there. Some of these famous families included Henry W. Oliver, William Penn Snyder, Harmar Denny, and Alexander M. Byers. Lincoln Avenue also became known for its grand homes.
Allegheny West is also famous as the birthplace of Gertrude Stein. She was a well-known writer.
