Allen Trimble (born November 24, 1783 – died February 3, 1870) was an important politician from Ohio. He served as the 8th and 10th governor of Ohio. He was also a member of different political parties throughout his life.

Biography

Allen Trimble was born in Augusta County, Virginia. His father, James Trimble, was a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. In 1784, when Allen was very young, his family moved to Kentucky.

Later, in 1804, Allen's father passed away. Allen then became the head of his family. He moved them to a new home near Hillsboro, Ohio, which he and his father had started.

Political Career

Allen Trimble began his career in government in 1808. He worked as a clerk for the Common Pleas Court. He also served as a recorder of deeds that same year.

During the War of 1812, he briefly served in the military. After that, he started his political journey in Ohio. He was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1816 to 1817. Then, he joined the Ohio Senate from 1818 to 1826.

Becoming Governor

While in the Senate, Allen Trimble became the Speaker of the Senate. This was a very important role. In 1822, the governor at the time, Ethan Allen Brown, resigned. Because Allen Trimble was the Senate Speaker, he stepped in as governor. He served for a short time, from January to December 1822.

He tried to be elected governor for a full term in 1822 but lost. He ran again in 1824 and lost once more. However, in 1826, he won the election by a lot! He was elected again in 1828 for a second full term. He decided not to run for governor in 1830.

After his time as governor, he mostly focused on farming. He didn't get involved in politics much for about 25 years. In 1855, he ran for governor one more time but came in third place. In 1860, he was part of a political meeting in Baltimore.

Death

Allen Trimble passed away at his family farm in Ohio. He was buried in the Hillsboro Cemetery in Hillsboro, Ohio.
