Allium sabulosum is a special type of wild onion that grows naturally in many parts of Eurasia. Eurasia is a huge landmass that includes both Europe and Asia. You can find this plant growing wild in places like European Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and a region in China called Xinjiang.

What is Allium Sabulosum?

Allium sabulosum is a plant that belongs to the Allium family. This family includes many plants we know and love, like regular onions, garlic, and chives! Wild onions like Allium sabulosum are not usually grown in gardens for food, but they are an important part of their natural environments.

What Does it Look Like?

This interesting plant grows from a single, egg-shaped bulb. Think of it like a small, underground storage unit for the plant! This bulb can be up to 20 millimeters (which is about the size of a small marble) across.

From this bulb, a tall stem, called a scape, grows upwards. This scape can reach up to 60 centimeters tall, which is about as tall as a ruler and a half! The leaves of Allium sabulosum are shaped like tubes, and they are usually shorter than the main stem.

At the very top of the stem, you'll find a cluster of many green flowers. This cluster is called an umbel, and it's packed tightly with blooms.
