The library has a long history. It started with two smaller branches, the Moneta Branch (formed in 1913) and the Strawberry Park branch (formed in 1919). These two branches joined together in 1958 to become the West Gardena Branch. After a fire in 1969, the library moved to a new location. The current building, which opened in 1977, was named after Masao W. Satow, a notable Japanese American person from the community.
