Area codes 310 and 424 facts for kids
Area codes 310 and 424 are special codes used for phone numbers in parts of California. They cover areas like West Los Angeles and the South Bay in Los Angeles County. A small part of Ventura County and Santa Catalina Island also use these codes. Santa Catalina Island is about 26 miles (42 km) south of the mainland. These codes are part of the North American Numbering Plan, which organizes phone numbers across North America.
History of Area Codes 310 and 424
Area code 310 was first created on November 2, 1991. It was made by splitting off from the older area code 213. This split helped to create more phone numbers as the population grew.
Later, on January 25, 1997, area code 310 was split again. This created area code 562 for the southeastern part of Los Angeles County.
Then, on July 26, 2006, area code 424 was added. It was put on top of the existing 310 area. This is called an "overlay plan." It was the first time an overlay plan was used in California. With an overlay, new phone numbers can use the 424 area code, even in places that already have the 310 area code. This means you might see both 310 and 424 numbers in the same city.
