Altamont is a community in Klamath County, Oregon, United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that looks like a town but isn't officially a city with its own local government. Altamont is located southeast of Klamath Falls.

In 2020, about 20,233 people lived in Altamont. Even though it's a separate community, all mail for Altamont uses Klamath Falls addresses. This is because Altamont is just outside the official city limits of Klamath Falls.

History of Altamont

Altamont might have gotten its name from a famous trotting horse named Altamont. A local horse lover, Jay Beach, owned this horse. There was a post office in Altamont for a few years, from 1895 to 1902.

Geography of Altamont

Altamont is in the southern part of Klamath County. It sits about 4,144 feet (1,263 meters) above sea level. The city of Klamath Falls is to the north and west of Altamont.

Roads and Travel

Two main roads pass through or near Altamont:

• Oregon Route 39 goes through the middle of the community. It's also known as South 6th Street and the Crater Lake Parkway. This road leads northwest into Klamath Falls. It also goes southeast about 21 miles (34 km) to the California border near Hatfield.
• Oregon Route 140 (Southside Expressway) runs along the southern edge of Altamont. This route goes east about 93 miles (150 km) to Lakeview. It also heads west about 72 miles (116 km) to White City, which is close to Medford.
