Alto Reed was a famous American musician. He was best known for playing the saxophone. Many people knew him as a long-time member of the band Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. His real name was Thomas Neal Cartmell. He was born on May 16, 1948, and passed away on December 30, 2020. He graduated from Lake Shore High School in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, in 1966.
Alto Reed's Musical Journey
Alto Reed had many memorable saxophone performances. You can hear his famous saxophone introduction in the song "Turn the Page". He also played the saxophone solo in "Old Time Rock and Roll". These are two of his most well-known works.
Reed also helped create music for two movies by actor Jeff Daniels. He performed with many other bands and musicians. Some of these include Foghat, Grand Funk Railroad, Little Feat, Dave Mason, The Ventures, and George Thorogood. He even played with Dan Aykroyd and James Belushi.
In 2004, Alto Reed attended the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony with Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band. Later, in 2008, he played with The Ventures. They invited him to perform with them at the Waldorf Astoria hotel. He played the song "Hawaii Five-O" for their own induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Reed also performed with his own band, The Blues Entourage, at the 2009 Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival.
Alto Reed toured with Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band for 42 years. He played on many of their popular albums. These include "Live Bullet", "Night Moves", "Stranger In Town", and "Against The Wind". His saxophone sound was a big part of their music.
In his later years, Reed continued to perform with various artists. On New Year's Eve 2016, he played with musicians like Dave Mason, Steven Tyler, and Alice Cooper in Maui, Hawaii. This event raised money for a food bank. He also performed at other charity events in Hawaii.
Honors and Awards
Alto Reed received special recognition for his musical talent. On May 19, 2012, he was inducted into the Canadian Blues Hall of Fame. This honor took place in Windsor, Ontario. He then headlined blues festivals across Canada that summer.
Reed also had the honor of performing "The Star-Spangled Banner" at major sports events. He played the American national anthem before a Major League Baseball game in 2011. He also performed it before an NFL game on Thanksgiving Day in 2012. He was a regular performer of the national anthem.

Alto Reed passed away on December 30, 2020. He was 72 years old.
