A Look Back in Time
Ancient Discoveries
Did you know Alverdiscott has a very old secret? There is a special Roman army camp here! It is called a 'marching camp fort' and is a protected historical site. This camp was built on an even older site from the Iron Age.
All Saints Church
The village church, called All Saints Church, is very old and beautiful. It is made of granite with slate roofs. It has a special Norman style font (a bowl for baptisms) and a Norman doorway. The church also has a tall tower and a pulpit from the 1500s. It is considered a very important building for its architecture.
Village Name and History
Over time, people stopped saying the middle letters of "Alverdiscott." Even though it sounds like "Alscott," the village kept its older spelling. However, one part of the village, "Alscott Barton," uses the shorter, more modern name. This Barton was once the main part of the old Manor of Alverdiscott.
Another historic place nearby is Webbery. This estate was even mentioned in the Domesday Book, a famous survey from 1086, where it was called WIBERIE.
Getting Around
Roads
The B3232 road goes around the main part of Alverdiscott. This road is the main connection between Great Torrington and Barnstaple. Great Torrington is about 4 miles (6.4 km) away and has a special protected area called a Conservation Area.
Railways
A local train line, called a community railway, runs through a valley about 4 miles (6.4 km) east of the village. You can catch a train at Chapelton railway station, which is a small stop where trains only stop if you ask them to. It is a bit closer than Barnstaple and can be reached by walking paths from the valley.
Village Life and Work
Alverdiscott has a steady economy. Many people work in farming or from home. Others travel to jobs in Barnstaple and other towns in west Devon.
During holidays, the village earns money from visitors. There are holiday lodges for people to stay in. Alverdiscott is a good spot for tourists because it is close to the South West Coast Path, the beaches at Westward Ho!, and many gardens and golf courses along the River Torridge. There is also an adventure activities center nearby in the next village, Huntshaw.
Looking to the future, there are plans for a big energy project called the Xlinks Morocco-UK Power Project. As of 2022, the plan is for this project to connect to the main electricity network, the National Grid, right here in Alverdiscott.
