History of Alvin
The Alvin area was first settled in the mid-1800s. Back then, people set up ranches for bulls in the area. Later, the Santa Fe Railroad built tracks through the area, and a small town grew up along the railway.
The town was first called "Morgan." This name honored Alvin Morgan, a Santa Fe employee who was one of the first people to live there. But they found out another town was already named Morgan. So, they decided to name the town after Alvin Morgan's first name: Alvin! The town officially became a city in 1893. This makes Alvin the oldest city in Brazoria County.
In 1979, a big storm called Tropical Storm Claudette hit Alvin. It rained a lot, with about 45 inches (1,100 mm) of rain falling in just 42 hours. At the time, this was the most rain ever recorded in 24 hours in American history!
