América Futebol Clube, often called América Mineiro, is a Brazilian football team. It comes from the city of Belo Horizonte, which is the capital of the Minas Gerais state. The club was started in 1912. It has kept its original name and badge since it began.
The team's first home kit colors were only white and green. The color black was added to their uniform in the 1970s. For a short time, between 1933 and 1942, the team even played in a red home kit. This was a way to protest against football becoming a professional sport.
América Mineiro plays its home games at the Independência stadium. The club has the third-largest group of fans among the teams in Minas Gerais.
América is known as one of the most traditional and successful teams from Minas Gerais. They have won the state championship, called the Campeonato Mineiro, 16 times. They also finished second 16 other times. Their first 10 wins were in a row, from 1916 to 1925. This is a national record for winning championships in a row. Their most recent state championship win was in 2016.
The club has also won other important titles. These include the Brazilian Second Division in 1997 and 2017. They won the South-Minas Cup in 2000. In 2009, they won the Brazilian Third Division.
América is famous for helping young football players become great talents. Many world-class players started their careers here. Some of these famous players are Tostão, Éder Aleixo, Yuji Nakazawa, Gilberto Silva, Fred, Danilo, and Richarlison.
The club's youth teams have also won major junior tournaments in Brazil. They won the São Paulo Juniors Cup in 1996. They also won the Brazilian Championship U-20 in 2011. The Belo Horizonte Juniors Cup was won by América in 2000 and 2014.

Club History and Key Moments
On April 30, 1912, a group of young men who loved playing football decided to create a club. They named it América Foot-Ball Club. They chose green and white as their team colors. Their first games were played on the mayor's field.
In 1913, América joined with another club, Minas Gerais Futebol Clube. After this, the team's colors changed to green, white, and black. From 1916 to 1925, the team achieved an amazing feat. They won ten state championships in a row!
In 1933, the club changed its colors to red and white. This was a way to show they disagreed with football becoming a professional sport in Brazil. However, in 1943, the club decided to make its football division professional. They then went back to their original green, white, and black colors. In 1948, América won its first state championship as a professional club.
In 1997, América won the Série B for the first time. In 2000, they won the first-ever Copa Sul-Minas cup. They beat their rival team, Cruzeiro, in the final match.
In 2004, América had a tough year in the Série B. They were moved down to the Campeonato Brasileiro Série C. In 2007, they finished last in the state championship. This meant they were moved down to a lower division for the next year. But América bounced back! They won the Série C in 2009. They beat ASA in the final.
The very next year, the team finished fourth in the Série B. This allowed them to return to the top level of Brazilian football after ten years. In 2013, América signed an agreement with the Tahitian Football Federation. This was to help develop young football players (under 20) in Tahiti.
Club Symbols and Mascot
The official song of América Mineiro was written by Vicente Motta. There are also two other popular songs for the club. One is an unofficial anthem by Fernando Brant and Tavinho Moura. The other is a supporters' anthem, with words by Márcio Vianna Dias.
América's mascot is a white cartoon rabbit. It has red eyes and teeth that stick out. This fun mascot was created by the cartoonist Fernando Pierucetti.
Big Rivalries: The Derbies
América's biggest rivals are Cruzeiro and Atlético Mineiro. The game between América and Atlético Mineiro is very famous. It is known as O Clássico das Multidões, which means The Derby of the Masses. The first time these two teams played was on November 15, 1913. It was a friendly game that ended in a 1–1 tie.
