Her mother, Patricia Amelia Polanco Álvarez, was one of the first women to become a pilot in the Dominican Republic. Her mother also represented their country in the Miss World pageant in 1980. Becoming Miss Universe
Amelia first won the title of Miss Dominican Republic. After that, she represented her country in the Miss Universe 2003 pageant. This big event took place in Panama City on June 3, 2003. Amelia made history by becoming the first person from the Dominican Republic to win the Miss Universe crown. She was the youngest winner since 1994. Amelia is also the tallest Miss Universe winner ever, standing at 6 feet 2 inches tall.
Her Music Career
Amelia started her artistic journey in musicals when she was 15 years old. She also recorded her first music demo at that age. Her first song, "Pasa Un Segundito," was released on April 26, 2010. It quickly became a popular Latin song. A few months later, she released another song called "Smog," which was about the environment.
Amelia announced that her full album, Agua Dulce, would be released on August 30, 2011. She promoted her music in places like Puerto Rico, Ecuador, and Panama. On December 24, 2011, Amelia Vega married Al Horford. He is a professional basketball player from the Dominican Republic who plays in the NBA. They had been dating for two years before they got married in Santo Domingo. Amelia and Al have five children together. Their children's names are Ean, Alía, Ava, Nova, and Mila.
Amelia is also related to the famous singer Juan Luis Guerra. He is a Grammy Award-winning artist from the Dominican Republic. Amelia studied and graduated from the Barbizon Modeling and Acting School in Santo Domingo. She is the sixth woman in her family to have "Amelia" as either her first or middle name.
