Early Life and Music Beginnings
Amil was born on September 19, 1973, in New York City. From a young age, she was raised by her aunt. Sadly, her aunt passed away in 1994. During these challenging times, Amil turned to music as a way to express her feelings and tell her story.
Music Career
Working with Jay-Z and Roc-A-Fella
In 1997, Amil was part of an all-female rap group called Major Coins. The group met the famous rapper Jay-Z, who was looking for a female artist to be on his next album, Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life. Jay-Z was impressed with Amil's freestyling skills and chose her for the part.
After Major Coins disbanded, Amil began a solo career with Jay-Z's record label, Roc-A-Fella Records. In 1999, she joined the Hard Knock Life Tour, performing across the country. This tour helped her become more well-known. She started working with many famous artists, including Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Jermaine Dupri, and LL Cool J.
She was featured on several of Jay-Z's hit songs, such as "... What, ... Who", "Can I Get A...", and "Do It Again (Put Ya Hands Up)".
Solo Album and Later Work
In August 2000, Amil released her first and only solo album, All Money Is Legal. The album featured many guest artists, including Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Memphis Bleek, Carl Thomas, Eve, and Beanie Sigel. The album had some success, but it did not sell as well as expected.
After her album, she released the single "Hey Papi" for the movie Nutty Professor II: The Klumps. In 2002, she also had a small acting role in the movie State Property.
Even after leaving Roc-A-Fella, Amil continued to make music. In 2005, she briefly got back together with her old group, Major Coins, and they released new songs. In 2008, she released mixtapes called Az Iz and Amil Returns: The Lost Classics Edition.
In 2012, Amil released a song called "Stop," and in 2014, she released another song called "Remember." These songs were meant for future projects that were never released.
