Amir Jamal Garrett (born May 3, 1992) is an American professional baseball pitcher. He is currently a free agent, meaning he can sign with any team. He has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for teams like the Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals, and Los Angeles Angels. Before focusing on baseball, Garrett played college basketball for the St. John's Red Storm. The Reds picked him in the 2011 draft, and he made his big league debut in 2017.

Early Years and First Steps in Baseball

Amir Garrett started high school in Nevada, then moved to California. For his senior year in 2010, he went to Findlay College Prep in Nevada. This school did not have a baseball team. His father encouraged him to try baseball again. Amir then showed his skills to Major League Baseball (MLB) scouts. He threw a fastball very fast, over 96 miles per hour!

In the 2011 MLB draft, the Cincinnati Reds chose Garrett in the 22nd round. He decided to sign with the Reds. He received a $1 million bonus for signing. The Reds also let him keep playing basketball. In the fall of 2011, Garrett went to Bridgton Academy in Maine. He played on their basketball team during the 2011–12 season.

Amir Garrett was a highly-rated basketball player coming out of high school. Experts ranked him as one of the best small forwards in the country. He chose to attend St. John's University to play college basketball for the St. John's Red Storm men's basketball team.

He was not allowed to play for the college basketball team at the start of his first year. This was because of school rules. Instead, he spent that time at Bridgton Academy, where he also played baseball. He became eligible to play basketball in December. As a freshman, Garrett played about 27 minutes in each game.

After the basketball season, Garrett played baseball for two minor league teams. These were the Arizona Reds and the Billings Mustangs. He had a 4.05 earned run average (ERA). This number shows how many runs a pitcher gives up on average. He also had 18 strikeouts and 13 walks in 20 innings pitched.

In his second year, Garrett started 11 basketball games. He scored about 5 points and grabbed 4 rebounds per game. After this season, he decided to leave St. John's. He wanted to transfer to another college basketball team. He moved to California State University, Northridge. He had to sit out the next season because of NCAA transfer rules. After that year, Garrett left college to focus completely on his professional baseball career.
