Andrea Barthwell went to Wesleyan University in Connecticut. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 1976. After that, she went to medical school at the University of Michigan. She graduated in 1980 with her M.D., which means she became a medical doctor.
Later, Dr. Barthwell moved to the suburban area of Chicago. There, she continued her studies at the University of Chicago. She also studied through the medical center of Northwestern University.
Her Professional Career
After becoming a doctor, Andrea Barthwell became a leader in her field. She was the President of the Illinois Society of Addiction Medicine. Then, she became the President of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. This group focuses on helping people with health challenges related to addiction.
Dr. Barthwell also led the Encounter Medical Group in Oak Park, Illinois. This group also helped people with addiction health care. In Chicago, she led two other organizations. These were the BRASS Foundation and interventions. Both helped people get support for addiction. In 1997, other doctors recognized her as one of the "Best Doctors in America" in this special area of medicine.
Dr. Barthwell also started a network called Two Dreams. This network helps people get treatment for addiction. It has locations in Chicago, the Outer Banks, and New Orleans.
Working in the Bush Administration
Dr. Barthwell worked in the White House for President George W. Bush. She was a deputy director for Demand Reduction. This role was part of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
In July 2004, she left her job. She was thinking about running for the United States Senate in Illinois. She would have run with the Republican Party. Another candidate had left the race, so the party needed someone new. Some members of the Illinois Republican Central Committee wanted Dr. Barthwell to run. She would have run against Barack Obama. But after some discussions, the committee chose Alan Keyes instead.
