Ani Kalayjian was born in Syria. She was one of seven children. In 1960, her family moved from Syria to the United States. Her family members are descendants of people who survived a very difficult historical event called the Armenian Genocide. This event caused a lot of suffering for many Armenian people.

Dr. Kalayjian studied at Columbia University’s Teachers College. She earned both her Master's and Doctoral degrees there. She also has an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Long Island University.

Meaningful World Organization

Dr. Kalayjian is the founder and president of an organization called the Association for Trauma Outreach & Prevention (ATOP), also known as Meaningfulworld. This group helps people who have experienced difficult events.

Since 1998, Dr. Kalayjian has worked with the United Nations. She represents Meaningfulworld there. She has also edited and written many books and articles for academic journals.

For over 20 years, Meaningfulworld has helped people in nearly 25 countries. They offer support after natural disasters like earthquakes, tornadoes, and tsunamis. For example, they traveled to Haiti to help people after an earthquake.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Kalayjian spoke about how trauma affects communities. She also co-authored an article about the mental health challenges of the pandemic.
