Fun Traditions in Anson
Anson is famous for its "Texas Cowboys' Christmas Ball". This is a special three-night event held just before Christmas. The very first ball happened in 1885 at M.G. Rhodes' Star Hotel in Anson. It was held every year until 1890, when the hotel burned down.
The event happened sometimes after that. But it stopped completely during Prohibition, a time when alcohol was illegal. A teacher named Leonora Barrett brought the event back in 1940. The dance is still held today in Pioneer Hall. This hall was built during the Great Depression as a Works Progress Administration project. The music is often played by Michael Martin Murphey and his band.
The "No Dancing" Law
Anson might have been the inspiration for the movie "Footloose". For a long time, the city had a "no dancing" law. This law was only lifted for the annual Christmas dance. In 1987, people worked to change this rule. They wanted to allow supervised dancing. This effort was successful. The story of this conflict became a book. It is called No Dancin' In Anson: An American Story of Race and Social Change. It was written by University of Texas professor Ricardo Ainslie.
