Ántero Flores-Aráoz Esparza was born on February 28, 1942. He is a Peruvian lawyer and politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Peru for a short time in November 2020.
He was once an important member and leader of the Christian People's Party. Later, he started his own group, the Order Party. He ran for president in the 2016 general election.

About Ántero Flores-Aráoz
Ántero Flores-Aráoz was born in Lima in 1942. His parents were Ántero Flores-Aráoz Adalid and Inés Esparza Moselli. He is also a great-great-great-grandson of Francisco Aráoz de Lamadrid. Francisco was a hero in the independence movements of Argentina and Peru.
His Education and Early Career
Ántero Flores-Aráoz went to Colegio La Salle de Lima for his primary and secondary schooling. He first studied law at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Later, he moved to the National University of San Marcos. There, he finished his law degree and became a lawyer.
He also worked as a teacher for some time. He taught at the University of Lima and the University of San Martín de Porres.
His Journey in Politics
Ántero Flores-Aráoz has had a long career in Peruvian politics. He held several important roles over the years.
Serving in Congress
He first tried to join the Congress of Peru in 1985. He was part of the Christian People's Party but was not elected that time. In 1990, he ran again for Congress. This time, he was elected as part of the FREDEMO group.
In 2004, he was chosen to be the President of the Congress of the Republic of Peru. He was the only Congress President from an opposition party during the time Alejandro Toledo was president. In December 2006, he became Peru's representative to the Organization of American States.
As Minister of Defense
In December 2007, Ántero Flores-Aráoz became the Minister of Defense for Peru. He took over from Allan Wagner Tizón. Mr. Wagner then became Peru's representative at the International Court of The Hague.
Flores-Aráoz was the Minister of Defense under President Alan García. He resigned from this role in 2009 after a conflict involving native communities.
As Prime Minister of Peru
In November 2020, Ántero Flores-Aráoz was named Prime Minister by Manuel Merino. This happened after the previous president, Martín Vizcarra, was removed from office. However, his time as Prime Minister was very short.
Manuel Merino resigned soon after. Then, Francisco Sagasti became the new president. Sagasti appointed Violeta Bermúdez to replace Flores-Aráoz as Prime Minister on November 18, 2020. After Merino's resignation, the government announced that an investigation would look into Flores-Aráoz's actions during his time in office.
His Political Views
Ántero Flores-Aráoz holds conservative political views. Early in his career, he was seen as a moderate Christian democrat. However, after leaving the Christian People's Party in 2007, his views became more conservative. He has also been active in speaking out against terrorism in Peru.
Views on Education
Regarding education, Flores-Aráoz supported some private universities that were closed by government regulators. These universities were considered to be of low quality. He believed they should "deserve a second chance." In 2006, he made a comment about discussing a free trade agreement with Peruvians. He said that not all citizens could understand technical issues, especially those who could not read or write well.
Views on Social Issues
Flores-Aráoz has conservative views on social topics. In 2016, he stated that he was "absolutely against gay marriage." He explained that he believed "in what is natural, what God did." He also took legal action against a dancer for actions involving the Peruvian flag.
