About Ara Malikian

Early Life and Music Studies

Ara Malikian was born on September 14, 1968, in Beirut, Lebanon. His family was Armenian. His father was also a violinist and encouraged him to play from a young age. Ara gave his first concert when he was just 12 years old!

When Ara was 14, he got a special invitation to study at a music school in Hannover, Germany. He was the youngest student ever accepted there. Later, he continued his studies in London, at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He learned from some very famous violin teachers.

Musical Style and Performances

Ara Malikian loves to mix music from different cultures. He plays music from the Middle East (like Arab and Jewish styles), Central Europe (like gypsy and Klezmer music), Argentina (tango), and Spain (flamenco).

He also plays very old and famous classical pieces. For example, he has performed all of Paganini's "24 Caprices" and the "Sonatas and Partitas" by J.S. Bach. He has even played new music written by modern composers.

Ara Malikian has traveled the world to perform. He has played in over 40 countries, including big cities like New York (Carnegie Hall), Paris (Salle Pleyel), and Madrid. He has also been part of many music festivals around the globe.

He has performed as a solo artist with many famous orchestras. These include the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and the London Chamber Orchestra. He has worked with well-known conductors too.

Ara Malikian was once the lead violinist (called the concertmaster) for the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid in Spain. This orchestra plays at the Madrid Royal Opera.

Collaborations and Albums

Since 1995, Ara Malikian has often performed with Armenian pianist Serouj Kradjian. They have recorded albums together, including a collection of music by Armenian composers.

He has also worked with many other artists. These include flamenco dancers, jazz musicians, and even film music composers. He helped record the music for movies like Hable con ella by director Almodóvar.

Ara Malikian has released two albums with flamenco guitarist José Luis Montón. One of these, "De la felicidad," was nominated for an award in Spain. He also recorded a double album of Paganini's music and albums of works by Sarasate, Ysaÿe, and J. S. Bach.
