Where the Aragón River Flows
The Aragón River is about 190 kilometers (118 miles) long. It has a large drainage basin, which is the area of land where all the rain and melted snow eventually flow into the river. This basin covers about 8,609 square kilometers (3,324 square miles). This area includes the Arga River, which is one of its main branches.
Starting Point of the River
The Aragón River starts high up in the mountains. Its source is in the Astún Valley, which is part of the Pyrenees mountains. This area is in the Huesca province in Aragon, very close to the border with France. The river begins at a high point, about 2,050 meters (6,726 feet) above sea level.
Journey Through Valleys
After starting in the high mountains, the Aragón River flows south. It passes through the Canfranc valley. Then, it turns west when it reaches the city of Jaca. In Jaca, the river's flow is about 8.15 cubic meters per second. As it continues, other smaller rivers join it. These include the Gas, Lubierre, Candanchú, Estarrún, Aragón Subordán, Aragón Veral, and Esca rivers.
When the river reaches Yesa, there is a large dam called the Yesa dam. Here, the river's flow increases to about 38 cubic meters per second.
Flowing to the Ebro
Below the Yesa dam, the Aragón River flows southwest into another region called Navarre. Finally, it joins the Ebro River near the town of Milagro. At this point, the Aragón River's flow is much larger, around 140 cubic meters per second.
The main rivers that join the Aragón River in Navarre are the Iratí, Cidacos, and Arga rivers. These are important tributaries that add more water to the Aragón.
